Chers Amis du Martinet ramoneur,
Il y a un moment qu’on vous a donné des nouvelles, mais, rassurez-vous, on est toujours en vie… et les Martinets aussi! De fait, malgré l’hiver rigoureux qu’on a connu et la distance qui nous séparait des martinets durant ces longs mois, la perspective de les revoir et de les entendre à nouveau piailler dans le ciel Outaouais ce printemps ne m’a jamais quittée.
L’attente a été longue, mais elle n’a pas été vaine. Bien qu’il y ait peu de ressources pour faire de l’observation au site, voici des mentions réjouissantes pour notre précieux dortoir de Shawville:
4 mai: de 35-40 Martinets sont entrés au dortoir pour y passer la nuit.
5 mai: 3 sont entrés et 7 tournoyaient autour du dortoir.
10 mai: 46 ou plus y ont passé la nuit.
Jetez un coup d’oeil au message de Deb ci-dessous; elle était sur place certains soirs et elle nous offre de croustillants détails. Si la tendance se maintient, le célèbre dortoir du Pontiac connaîtra une bonne saison de fréquentation 2015! …à suivre!
Par ailleurs, ne désespérez pas, la plaque des donateurs est dans le collimateur, on vous-en redonne des nouvelles, parole de scout!

Dear Friends of the Chimney Swift,
It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us but we’re still here and … the Chimney Swifts are back with us!
The first report of their return was from a neighbour to the roost who saw 35-40 entering the structure about 1/2 hour after sunset on May 4. The next night, May 5, I went to watch but only saw 3 entering the roost though there were 7 flying around town. I suspect the others went into a small brick chimney nearby that is a nesting site as well. On May 10, I was thrilled to watch a good sized gang of swifts doing their typical aerial antics, including the carousel swirl for about 7 minutes, before pouring in a steady stream (with some clumps!) into the roost around 8:40 pm.
I would estimate the number at 46 swifts but I’m a little out of practice for doing an accurate count when they all go in within a minute or less and there could easily have been 50. Very much looking forward to honing my skills leading up to the official count dates starting May 20!
It also struck me how their behaviour was different from last year when the structure was new and they would fly in and out a number of times with some birds leaving to go elsewhere. Sunday night was like the « good old days » when the original chimney was open. The birds fluttered in and stayed!

Great News. So, so happy. They are back in our neighbourhood too (Ottawa). We watched what looked like hundreds descending in a beautiful swirl into a chimney on our street Sunday night. Amazing to view.

Effectivement, les Martinets semblent revenus pour de bon et nous en sommes enchantés. Concernant votre commentaire sur notre titre qui n’est effectivement plus approprié, il semble qu’il soit impossible de le changer du fait que la campagne soit terminée.

Je ne comprends pas tout à fait pourquoi l’entête est Swifts in Distress. L’article semble plutôt dire que les martinets sont revenus et que vous êtes contents.
Je suis contente d’avoir contribu.un tant soit peu à vous aider à realiser ce beau projet.Je suis fière et reconnaissante aux citoyens qui se sont mobilises pour voir au bien-être des martinets.

I routinely see swifts over NDG in Montreal, but have not tracked down their roost here.
I also was pleased to see some over Washington last week.
